USD/ASIA: Banking Rumours Unnerve Asia

Sydney, August 2. The rumour mill has worked overtime in Asia today with firstly rumours of a bank in china in trouble and then an article in the FT of a bail out for a German lender being organized. In Taiwan heavy losses in the financial sector has turned the local bourse around sharply with foreign investors apparently heading for the exit door. The two poorest performers equity wise around the region this week and last week have been Taiwan and S. Korea but one also needs to keep in perspective that Taiwan up until this week led the y-t-d charts for the largest foreign inflows so far. As we print, regional bourses are staging mini- recoveries with the Taiex now down only 0.1%. The largest falls rest with Manila down 1.9% and the Hang Seng down 1.3%. The high beta group has returned to the highs of yesterday and was last traded at USD/MYR 3.4745, USD/PHP 45.85 and USD/IDR 9330.
