EUR/USD: Fresh All-Time Highs Continue To Trade

London, March 13. EUR/USD printed 1.5587 amid its early Asian rally. The latest all-time highs eclipsed the 1.5572 highs seen in NY as the Euro march higher shows little sign of abating. Only the big figure marks of 1.56, 1.57 etc and the slim hopes of combined intervention are seen above with 1.60 touted as the new 1.50.

Into European action and the pair sits close to the new historic highs with further stabs higher widely expected as the Dollar struggles for traction. Worries over everything from the recent Fed action to the broader US economy keep the US unit on the defensive with the latest Mid-East and China rumours doing little to help the embattled unit.

A run towards 1.56 is eyed in the near-term with topside option barriers only seen acting as targets for bulls to aim at. However, buying dips is preferred by many given the rate of the ascent. Bids into 1.5550 trail to 1.5535 with fundamentalists talking of a drop out of the 1.50"s being needed to remove the focus from the topside.

Looking ahead, should USD/JPY break below 100 then EUR/USD could snap higher with more Euro Zone rhetoric expected intraday.

USD/JPY: Rumors BoJ Checking Rates

London, March 13. Talk around the market that BoJ has been checking rates at certain institutions, but only rumors at this stage. The rumor itself could well have done the trick however, with the market trading firmly back on a 100.00 handle since and now potentially cautious of the downside as a result, after its dip to new 12 year lows at 99.80. Japanese importer demand cited as the main driver on the subsequent 100 recovery, with Russian sellers having been the catalyst for the initial break.

ECB says current rates will help anchor inflation expectations

FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - The European Central Bank said its current level of interest rates will help to anchor inflation expectations in the euro zone.


'The firm anchoring of medium to longer-term inflation expectations is of the highest priority. The governing council believes that the current monetary policy stance will contribute to achieving this objective,' the ECB said in its March monthly bulletin.


The ECB's main interest rate has been at 4.00 pct since June. Persistent inflation pressures have prevented the central bank from cutting interest rates in response to slowing euro zone growth, according to economists.


Euro zone inflation reached 3.2 pct in January and February, the highest level recorded since the launch of the euro.


The ECB said inflation is subject to strong upward pressure in the short term as a result of rise in energy and food prices, and risks to the medium-term inflation outlook are on the upside.


It said it expects inflation to remain significantly above 2 pct in the coming months and moderate only gradually later in the year.


The ECB said it is strongly committed to preventing upside risks to price stability from materialising and to ensuring that the surge in energy and food prices does not have knock-on effects on wages and other prices.


'It is imperative that all parties concerned meet their responsibilities and that second round effects on price-setting, on the one hand, and on wages, on the other hand, stemming from current inflation rates be avoided,' it said.


It said it is monitoring euro zone wage negotiations very closely.


Meanwhile, the central bank said the latest economic data point to moderating but ongoing real GDP growth, and the euro zone's economic fundamentals are sound.
